'길 잃은 세계 탐험가' 데이비드 드 로스차일드 (David de Rothschild)가 세운 남극의 '화이트 데저트' (하얀 사막) 호텔에서 여행은 시작된다. 

11월에서 12월만 남극여행이 가능하고 지금 예약하면 2년은 기다려야 하는 여행!

남극으로 가는 교통수단은 크루즈나 비행기가 있다. 그리고 화이트 데저트 (위치어웨이 캠프 Whichaway Camp)에 가려면 비행기가 유일한 수단으로 '언노운' (Unknown) 국제공항 이용한다.

 

현대의 극지방 탐험가들이 모여 설립한 여행사 ‘화이트 데저트’가 추위와 장애물을 피할 수 있도록 일정을 관리로 안전한 여행을 할 수 있다. 남극여행 탐험은 Whichaway Camp를 출발점으로, 퀸 모드 랜드 Queen Maud Land의 동쪽에 자리 잡은 숙소로, 7개의 돔호텔 형 조립식 건물로 구성된다. '우주 탐사' '외계 행성' 이라는 단어가 이미징되는 마치 SF 영화의 촬영 세트와 흡사하다. 그 외에 더 큰 돔이 6개 있는데, 그중 3개는 모피를 덮은 소파와 다양한 책을 구비한 공용 공간으로 사용된다. 

가장 일반적인 남극 대륙여행은 크루즈를 이용한 뱃길이다. 고무보트를 이용해 육지로 상륙한 뒤 그룹별로 펭귄, 물개 등 바다 동물을 구경하고 돌아가는 구성이다. 매년 5만 명 이상이 그렇게 남극을 둘러본다. 그러나 남극 대륙 위에서 직접 묵고 가는 방문객은 1백60여 명에 지나지 않는다.

1일차, 5시간의 남극으로 비행

We fly to Antarctica (5hrs) and cross thousands of icebergs as we pass over the Southern Ocean.

During the flight, we cross into the polar circle and into 24hrs continuous daylight. landing on the specialist ice runway, you will transfer to our camp and go for a gentle trek around the oasis

 

2일차 ‘Whichaway camp’ 정착, Activitie ice climbing 활동 등

Settle into White Desert’s ‘Whichaway camp’ and do as much or as little as you like each day. Activities

range from gentle treks to the incredible ice waves, summiting a nunatak, ice climbing and even

abseiling!

 

3일차, 2시간의 남극대륙 비행, 황제 펭귄 서식지에서 “march of the penguins”.

We fly 2hrs across Antarctica,providing immense views of the high polar plateau, before landing

at the emperor penguin colony.

You will be among the very few who have ever witnessed such a spectacle and be able to see the reallife stars of “march of the penguins”.

 

4일차, 얼음터널과 얼음 파도 탐험,  근처 남극기지 방문 그들의 연구 활동 체험

We explore the ice waves beneath our camp, delving into the series of ice tunnels that are as surreal as they are beautiful. The day ends with a visit to the nearby science base to learn more about their work.

 

5일차, 남극 탐험과 비행

You will leave early in the morning in the Dc3 Basler plane. We will fly across stunning mountain ranges before landing at 83 degrees south to refuel. You will have a chance to walk around the high polar plateau before continuing onto the pole.

At the south pole itself, you will have lots of time for photos, a tour around the base and a chance

to stamp your passport before camping down for the night.

 

6일차, 캠핑 그리고 탐험 성공 만찬!

After a night spent camping, you will be given a hearty breakfast before boarding the plane once again for the flight back to our camp. The flight is the perfect chance to really appreciate the immense scale of Antarctica, before you return to our camp for a three-course dinner and champagne to celebrate your achievement.

 

7일차, 극지 탐험 체험과 누나탁암벽 등반 

This is an easier day with talks from our polar explorer staff about some of the lesser known history of Antarctica and their world record-breaking expeditions. Then its time for a giant abseil off the nearby nunatak mountain

 

빙하속에서 솟아오른 암봉을 뜻하는 ‘누나탁 Nunatak’ 에스키모인들이 그린란드에서 이와 같은 지형을 보고 ‘누나탁’이라고 부른 데서 유래했다고 알려진다.

 

8일차, 남극에서 마지막 극한 체험

The penultimate day at Whichaway exposes guests to one of the wonders of the oasis.

An adventurous hike along a cliff path exposes guests to sea ice that has been folded by constant pressure from the Southern Ocean. Guests are safe at all times and the view from the very edge of the oasis is unforgettable.

 

9일차, 남극에서 일정을 마감하고, 남아프리카 케이프타운으로

The flight out of Antarctica will be the last of your unforgettable Antarctic memories before you delve

back into the noise and heat of Africa. You will be transferred to your hotel where you will have a chance

to relax in a hot bath and reflect on your Antarctic adventure!
